"Remember, this is a team effort. Your roommate will be your lifeline when the chocolate calls. Don't let her fail you. The team that loses the most on the Body Mass Index at the end of the month will be awarded the spokesperson's contract worth upwards of forty thousand dollars," said the trim boot camp diva of ceremonies with legs of steel. She had her audience riveted.
Crystal couldn't have cared less about becoming an infomercial diva. She wanted a new life. As she looked around at controlled applause in the sea of pink skirt suits in subtle shades from cloud to fuchsia, she finger-combed her long, mousy brown hair and squirmed, tugging on her size 1X stretch jeans, to make her thighs and crotch comfortable. Giving up, she flicked a tiny dandruff flake off her black ribbed tank top and tucked her errant white bra strap back underneath.
One other soul stood out. Seated in the rigid conference chair next to her was her Scottish e-pal Rosaleen Dalrymple, who'd talked her into this retreat. Bespectacled, frizzy redheaded Rosaleen wore an ankle length, blue plaid jumper, dingy grey tee shirt with armpit stains, and plastic flip flops. Crystal shook her head. Had she any idea how Roslaeen dressed, perhaps she would have treated her to a new outfit or two.
"As you'll see on page forty-one, along with a strict ten carbohydrates per day diet, the exercise component is straightforward. Activity, ladies. The best and safest way for you Sofa Sherries to begin is walking. The valet will not release your Mercedes until after graduation. Cabs will not carry you, the busses will not shuttle. Don't even think of renting one of those cute little motorized scooters you see models zipping around on. Use your large muscles, ladies. Build endurance. Increase your aerobic capacity."
The women applauded again.
Crystal was on board. Yes. I can walk. Yes, if my meals are prepared, I can adjust to a restricted carbohydrate diet. All of the support will be fun. Just like college. Or what my impression of college is like from books. A wave of shame tried to overtake Crystal. Everybody here probably has at least a bachelor's degree. And a fabulous career.
"You will be assigned a canteen. Keep it filled and with you at all times. Optimum water intake is twelve eight-ounce servings per day. Strive to hit that target exactly. No more, no less. And subsequently, ladies, you need to feel free to pee. With two hundred women on the same schedule, the designated restrooms at this conference center will prove inadequate. Do not waste time in line. Guard the door of the men's room and take turns. A body waiting in line for a toilet is not a body in motion burning fat. If you stand in line for five minutes every time nature calls this month, you will be two pounds heavier. It's not worth it, ladies."
Uproarious laughter and nods filled the room.
No wonder I'm fat. Wow. I had no idea. Yes, absolutely I'll use the men's room. All right then, two pounds guaranteed weight loss. Check.
"Turn to page forty-eight. Tomorrow's itinerary: Breakfast in the Palm ballroom from five-fifteen to five thirty-five. Feel free to mingle and meet the other ladies. Most of you are sales consultants with the Patty Unger Cosmetics Company. Enjoy chatting with your counterparts from other states and territories. After breakfast, you all have a rigid list of activities to achieve before lunch at high noon, back in the Palm ballroom. You and your roommate are responsible for each other's successful completion. Don't be a weak link."
The ladies applauded yet again. Crystal turned to Rosaleen. The friends smiled and nodded in unison.
Crystal skimmed the activities. This sounded fun. A sunrise stretching period on the beach. Power walking in the saltwater pool. A four-minute restroom break. Thirty-six minutes on the cardio machines. Sweat a few pounds off in the sauna. Power Pilates. Thirty minutes to shower and dress for lunch.
"Our afternoons are for spiritual growth. We will meet for a prayer session on the beach, in front of the first lifeguard stand to the left of the steps. We will rotate through the world's great religions. Deeply contemplate the messages. Open your heart to your maker. Accept Him in different forms through the hearts of your peers."
Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever. At least we'll get to relax.
"At one PM, you will break off into groups for barefoot beach walking. Please arrive in a suitable bathing suit with ample sunscreen, SPF 50 or higher, sunglasses, and sun bonnets. Each group will receive a unique novel to read while walking. Yes, ladies. We will learn to integrate exercise seamlessly into our lives. You can, and will, walk and read a book. Be prepared for a pop quiz at breakfast each morning, on the previous day's book."
Is she kidding? I'm supposed to read and walk and finish the book in one day? And not collapse of heat exhaustion? Miami in July. What was I thinking, signing on for this? Crystal turned to Rosaleen, who had an alarmed expression on her blotchy face.
The boot camp commander continued, "For our first week's reward, we have arranged to have a mixer with the Homeland Security First Responders Conference. Cocktail dresses are required. Don't forget hose, a minimum three-inch heel, and full make up."
Cocktail dress? Sausage casings and lip balm? Great. Homeland Security First Responders? Oh, don't they sound like a fun bunch? Crystal envisioned a group of fat, balding fifty-somethings so uptight they dance you suspiciously through metal detectors.
"All right, ladies. Retrieve your luggage from the holding area. Please form a line, two across with your roommate. Heads up, breasts high. Walk proudly through the hotel and out into the night to our dormitories at the Jesuit school."
Dormitories? Jesuit school? "Rosaleen, what's she talking about? I thought we were booked here at the hotel."
"Only for the meetings, meals, and spa services. We are rooming in the dorms to keep us away from temptation."
"In other words, they want to keep us from ordering room service."
"Exactly."

Posted by Sherry Morris | 12:47 PM | Author Sherry Morris, cookies, Neapolitan Cookies, recipe, sammie jo moresca | 5 comments »
In honor of the first anniversay of the Pink Fuzzy Slipper Writers, here is the first recipe I posted:
Sherry's Neapolitan Cookies
1 Pkg or Can (7 to 8 oz) Almond Paste
1 1/2 Cup (3 sticks) Butter
1 Cup Sugar
4 Large Eggs, Separated
1 Teaspoon Almond Extract
2 Cups Unsifted All-purpose Flour
Red and Green Food Coloring
1/4 Cup Raspberry Jam
1/4 Cup Apricot Preserves
1 Pkg (6 oz) Semisweet-Chocolate Pieces
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease bottom and sides of three cookie sheets; line with waxed paper; grease waxed paper.
In large bowl, with electric mixer, beat almond paste, butter, sugar, egg yolks and almond extract until fluffy; stir in flour.
In small bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form; stir into almond-paste mixture.
Place 1 1/3 cups of the batter in each of two small bowls. Add red food color to one and green food color to the other. Spread red batter in one cookie sheet. Spread green batter in second cookie sheet. Spread plain batter in third cookie sheet. Bake each for 15 minutes at 350°; Remove from oven and cool completely.
On large cutting board or additional cookie sheet, invert green layer; spread with raspberry jam. Add plain layer; spread with apricot preserves. Top with red layer; cover with wax paper or plastic wrap; set heavy pan on top; refrigerate overnight.
The next day, in small glass bowl, microwave chocolate pieces on HIGH 3 minutes, stirring once; spread over red layer; trim edges. Let chocolate set slightly; cut crosswise into 1/2 inch strips; cut each into four pieces.
Makes about 8 Dozen.
I have tweaked this recipe to perfection. My 14-year-old just made them and they were by far the most delicious cookies we've ever enjoyed-- even better than Neapolitans from the Mr. Cookie bakery in New York. These cookies require two days of hard work. The almond paste is hard to find and costs about $5.00, but my oh my are they worth it. I highly recommend them to everyone, especially if you have a special occasion where you want to impress and spoil people.

I'm Sammie Jo Moresca, the American housewife also known as Sherry Morris. But not the Australian Sherry Morris who writes inspriationals. And not the beautiful Christian singer Sherry Morris.
I've been writing since the turn of the century. Within the last three years, I've had fourteen books published with small presses. My obscure Cerridwen Press eBook, IMMACULATE DECEPTION, won a Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award. My Phaze eBook SMOLDER, which is now in print, was the debut book-of-the-month selection at All Romance eBooks. Every story I've written has been published.
In September, my steady selling novella, DIET ANOTHER DAY, will come out in a Big Beautiful Woman romantic comedy print anthology titled MORE, MORE, MORE! published by Phaze Books.
At Christmastime, Phaze will publish WISH UPON A DJINN, a fantasy Chrismas story about a harried married couple who renew their love.
Next Spring, Mundania Press will publish FIGHT DIRTY FOR ME, a 1945 era romantic suspense. It will release in eBook and print simultaneously. This is a sequel to HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL.
I have completed a chick lit mystery, INAPPROPRIATE, which I will place with a literary agent and sell to a large New York publisher. This is the first story my critique partners seemed to enjoy. They giggled as I read every chapter.
I'm so happy to be here with the Pink Fuzzy Slipper Writers and look forward to sharing my kooky views of the world with everyone.

Coming Together for the Cure
is a multi-author erotic romance anthology
Excerpt from A Town Called Night
An erotic vampire romance
Jaynie Petrov stowed her purse on the floorboard of the ambulance, tucking it away on the front seat passenger’s side.
“Hi, Petrov.”
She glanced over her shoulder at the unfamiliar voice. It emanated from the tall, dark and hunky paramedic dressed in the pressed blue uniform. She’d seen that perfectly coiffed raven hair before, last week when she pulled a double shift at the commuter bus accident. This was… hmm… What was his name? His partner was Gary, and, if she worked at the Parthenon, she’d usher them both to the front row. Gay gods. Yep. Nobody is that good looking and heterosexual.
Jaynie forced her eyes to the brass name badge on his left shirt pocket. H.L. Bledsoe.
“So, how come you’re letting me drive tonight?”
What a familiar question from someone she’d never met. How did he know she usually drove Medic-7?
“Have we met?”
He extended his hand. She stood and shook it. And then had to exert a little force to pry it out of his grip. Great. He’s gay and weird. I have all the luck.
“I’m Hal Bledsoe.”
“I saw you last week on the commuter bus call. What an adrenaline rush, eh?”
“Blood everywhere. We transported the driver.”
“Did she make it?”
“I don’t know. I never follow up.”
Jaynie walked to the rear of the vehicle, opened one door and stepped up. Hal followed. She jabbed a key into the drug box and twisted it open.
“I don’t follow up either. As it is, I have a hard time not hugging all my patients. Gotta remember this is just a job and leave it when the shift ends.” Satisfied the narcotics were all accounted for, she locked them back up.
They climbed into their seats. Jaynie hit the remote control button and the firehouse doors parted.
After positioning the driver’s seat to accommodate his long legs, Bledsoe buckled up then adjusted the mirrors. He toggled the headlights on.
Jaynie noticed he didn’t primp as she’d expected a pretty boy to. She strapped in and rolled the window down an inch.
Hal radioed the dispatcher. “Communications, this is Medic-7. We’re off the air, en route to our special detail.”
The disembodied male voice said, “All right, Medic-7.”
And away they drove through the streets of a town called Night.
Jaynie reached down and grabbed her purse. Nervously fumbling through the contents, she felt for the smooth flat plastic and pulled it out. Peering into her lighted mirror, she finger fluffed her short brown hair, flipping it up and under. She shook her head to distribute some volume.
Hal asked, “So, you didn’t answer me. Why aren’t you driving tonight?”
“You have a license, don’t you?”
“Duh.”
She rolled her eyes at him. What a jerk… with an impossibly perfect jaw line .“Fine. Pull over and I’ll drive.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to push your button.”
“I’m just a little distracted tonight.” I hope I don’t throw up. Not that I’d been able to choke down more than a hard-boiled egg all day. Well, if I do, at least it will be over with quickly and I’ll feel better.
Jaynie stared at the oncoming headlights, mesmerized as they wound through the mountains. She finally asked, “So’d you do something wicked and they punished you by detailing you to Medic-7 on the p.m. tour while my partner’s on light duty?”
“I put in for a transfer to p.m. tour. No slots available except this temporary detail.”
“You like working at night? I mean at night in Night during night season?” After five years of living in the township of Night, Jaynie was accustomed to the two lunar months every autumn when the sun didn’t rise. Actually, she looked forward to the extra sleep it stimulated.
“Call me a creature of the night.” He shifted in his seat, adjusting his crotch.
She watched. Jaynie enjoyed studying a good-looking man while he touched himself, even if it was nonsexual.
He placed his right hand back on the steering wheel. She looked for a gay wedding ring. Nope.
“Let me see your left hand.”
“Relax, I’m not armed.” He held it up.
From the green-lighted glow of the dashboard, she observed that one was also bare. Hmm… so no state sanctioned civil ceremony took place either. “Did you and your significant other have a falling out?”
He changed lanes and passed a tractor hauling double trailers. “Significant other? Not me. I’m a lone wolf. Not the marrying kind. Not the shacking up kind. Not the commitment type.”
“So, did your partner give you the old ultimatum then, marry me or hit the road, Jack?”
“Partner?”
“Gary, or whoever worked with you on Medic-13.”
Hal swung into the drive leading up to the only sports arena/theatre/concert hall/’Pay-Per-View’ venue in the town of Night, their own version of the Parthenon. Jaynie performed another primping session. So he’s not answering my question. Must’ve been a bad break up.
He parked the ambulance at the rear service entrance. “Come on, you don’t need makeup, you’re beautiful, Petrov. Besides, most of the audience will be female. Who are you trying to look good for?”
Exactly why I have to look better than all of them. Jaynie slicked on one last coat of raspberry swirl gloss and rubbed her lips together. Capping the tube, she shoved it back into her purse and stowed it on the floorboard, under the glove compartment.
Her heart pounded as they traversed the bowels of the stadium, across the vault, nodding to the no nonsense security guards. This could be the night I’ve dreamt of.
They emerged on the floor in front of the stage, in the pit where the general admission ticket holders with neon orange armbands sat on the floor with their legs crossed.
Hal commented, “The house is only half full. These guys are fading.”
“Maybe so, but they sure used to rock my world.”
“So music moves you?”
“Of course.” Her eyes traveled up to the stadium seating. A few people sat all the way up against the wall in the cheap seats. But most of the audience was down low, to the left of the stage.
“Let’s go stand on the other side,” she said. Devin always performs on the left side.
“Yeah, whatever.”
Her hunky partner followed her across the floor. She glanced over her shoulder. Damn, I love his lips… so darned kissable. They positioned themselves near the stage. Jaynie studied Hal’s face. Oh no. I’m staring. Better say something. “Does your hair do that easily, or does it take a lot of work to get the disheveled cover model look?”
Hal smiled as the room went dark. The fans squealed as they clambered to their feet. Blue and green lights searched as the opening act, a Beach Boys cover band, warmed up the ladies.
Jaynie didn’t know if she wanted them to hurry up so the main attraction would commence or hope something went wrong and the main attraction didn’t show. No, I don’t want anyone to get hurt. There would be a revolt of the fans and a stampede–meaning cuts, bruises and bones to set. Jaynie enjoyed the latter. She’d been top in her cadet class at setting bones. Splinting compound fractures were a rush. Well, provided the patient was unconscious.
She turned her head and stretched up toward her partner. Damn. His ear was even perfectly wrought. All the best specimens are married or walk on the other side of the moon. “Make a deal with you. I’ll take the broken bones and you take the abrasions, cuts, and concussions.”
“Who’ll do the syncopes?”
“Yeah, the girls will be fainting tonight, swooning over Devin,” she sighed.
“I hope they stocked the triage room with water.”
“You didn’t inventory?”
“Have you seen me leave?”
“I guess it’s too late now.” Her mind drifted back to where she hadn’t let it in such a long time. To a sultry summer in Miami. She’d sneak out at midnight and make her way down along the bay. Her friend Samantha’s family ran a boutique hotel two blocks from the beach. Okay, Miami Beach is an island, and not very wide, mostly beach front, so, within that context, it was nowhere near the beach. And boutique hotel doesn’t exactly classify their establishment. Something along the lines of flophouse would be more accurate. Think transplanted New Jersey and New York residents, ancient Jewish and Italian men with leather faces and hanging skin.
The flophouse sat diagonally across the street from the recording studio where Devin and his band worked. Jaynie and Samantha would sit on the hotel roof and spy, waiting for Devin to emerge. Samantha was a fun girl, always eager for the next adventure. Jaynie felt a bit guilty sometimes for using her. He usually emerged around 2:00 a.m. God, he was such a fine specimen. And he had that extra something. Well, so the rumors went anyhow. He was supposed to be half-vampire.
That’s what drew Jaynie to him more than his music. She had always wanted to be kissed by a vampire, and to bite one. Yep, bite one. Taste his blood to see if it rocked her world.

by Sammie Jo Moresca (Sherry Morris)
“Have a tall drink of water handy to put out the fire when you read Smolder, Sammie Jo Moresca’s poignant story of the after effects of September 11th.
Johnny Newman is one of New York City’s finest; the Fire Department’s most eligible bachelor. He’s been in love with his best friend’s widow for years. In fact, Johnny was the one to introduce them. When September 11th made her a widow, who was it she turned to for strength? Johnny was always there, fixing things in her home, helping her through her grief, finishing all the projects in the house that Susan and Brandon had planned to finish. Now, after two years, it’s time to let her know how much she means to him. Johnny feels he has given her enough time to get over Brandon, but will his playboy reputation ruin his chances?
Susan Cervini is caught up in trying to locate a missing cousin through a website for an aging pop star. When Susan begins to have irrational feelings for her best friend, Johnny, she is afraid she will ruin their friendship, but she can’t seem to stop feeling an overpowering need for his touch. Can they have a smoldering affair and go back to being friends, or will the feelings they have for each other change Susan’s mind about love and marriage again?
Johnny Newman is a real American hero; strong in his beliefs, dedicated to helping others, and loyal to the woman he loves above all others. He is sexy but unaware of his appeal, chivalrous without being conscious of it, and a wonderful friend; the way he unselfishly dedicates himself to Susan’s needs, even the times she took him for granted, brought tears to this reader’s eyes a time or two. Susan was a little tougher for this reader to warm up to, but once her secret misgivings came to light it was a pleasant turn-around. She is a very caring woman who is afraid of losing again. Her restoration of faith was a long and hard journey but was well worth the wait. Her love for Johnny is a beautiful thing to behold, culminating in a climactic coming together. For fans of a sultry and emotional love story, Smolder is a good choice. Bravo, Sammie Jo Moresca, a brilliant way to tell a poignant story of the day that changed many of our lives. Smolder is another keeper to add to my ever growing library.”
Excerpt from Smolder
By Sammie Jo Moresca:
"I brought you a turkey with Swiss on white. From Vinnie's." Johnny Newman placed the sandwich and a half pint of skim milk on the rough granite tombstone. Squatting, he ran his soot-stained hand over the lettering.
BRANDON ARTHUR CERVINI
MARCH 21, 1970--SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
IN THE LINE OF DUTY
His eyes halted on the Maltese cross. He bowed his head and crossed himself.
"Two years ago today, Brandon. We found you ... your hand." He cleared his throat as he fought the saline escaping from both eyes. "Susan's okay now. Man, it was bad on her. She wanted to join you. We had to do an intervention. She spent a couple weeks in the hospital. Your mom and I, we took turns staying with her when she got back home.
"Anyhow, I just wanted to bring you the sandwich. I haven't eaten at Vinnie's anymore since..." He exhaled.
"And I wanted to let you know not to worry about Susan. She's gonna make it all right. And, um, I'm gonna keep lookin' out for her. What I'm tryin' to say is, I love Susan. Well, of course you already knew that. But I mean ... I'm in love with her. It's not the September Eleventh widow syndrome thing either. I didn't move in on her a couple weeks after..."
An ambulance wailed by. Johnny sat back on his heels. He picked a thick blade of grass and entwined it in his fingers, pulling it so tight the tips turned red. "Did ya know eight guys left their wives and kids for the widows? Jesus. Shunned one family in favor of another. The psychologists they sent around tried to explain the phenomenon. They warned us there would be affairs. I swear I haven't touched her. And I've kept the wolves away. Johnson and Caruthers. Friggin' bastards. Can you believe it?" Johnny yanked a handkerchief from his pocket and blew his nose. "She's a beautiful woman and all, but they should've had more respect for you ... and Susan, than that." He stood up and unwrapped the sandwich, straightening it on top of the headstone. The white paper flapped under it.
"Anyhow, I just wanted to have a talk with you first. I wanted to let you know my intentions. I've got no idea how Susan feels toward me. But I'll tell you one thing, buddy. I plan on standing in Times Square, watching the ball drop and kissing my fiancée to ring in the New Year." Johnny opened the milk container and placed it next to the sandwich. He crossed himself and walked down the path.
A nun called out, "You can't leave trash here. Remove it."
Johnny smiled and closed the gate behind him.
