We’ve heard all the jokes about Southerners not being able to drive if two snowflakes fall together. But what those jokes don’t mention is the fact that no one can drive on ice coated streets. Atlanta is gridlocked. There was a major error in judgment and all one million plus people in the city hit the streets at the same time. Add to that thousands of big trucks on the major highways that jack-knifed or stalled out and you have a recipe for disaster.

The news coming out of the Atlanta area has been filled with pictures of stranded motorists. Children has to spend the night at school because the buses could not take them home. Other students were stranded on school buses for hours and even all night. This is the stuff of nightmares for parents. My children are grown, my grandchildren could have been included in this debacal. Luckily they were not. My heart goes out to the children, parents and teachers who have been caught up in this mess.

Slowly the traffic is beginning to move through Atlanta, still there are people stranded.
Yet in the midst of all this there are the stories that make you smile. A baby delivered safely by a police officer on 285. Target, Home Depot, CVS, Kroger and other stores allowing stranded motorist to spend the night in the warmth of their stores. Many of those stores are not open 24 hours, but chose to remain open to help the citizens in need. Kudos to them!
There were Facebook pages set up to help people stranded on the expressway with people in the area who offered help.
One man made PB&J sandwiches and walked to the expressway to hand out food to those who’d been stranded for 18+ hours.
So things continue to be difficult here in Georgia today. Hopefully everyone will soon be home and safe. The cold is depressing, the icy roadways are depressing. Hoping everyone stays in and is safe.

Most adults cringe when the weatherman predicts snow. I can understand this. Driving on icy roads is no fun. But nature enthralls me as I watch the snow fall outside my living room window. Fat snowflakes cover the landscape with a glistening white blanket. Soon, children’s laughter will fill the air. Carrot-nosed snowmen will appear. Sledding enjoyed. It’s a magical winter scene, just right for curling up on the sofa with my favorite book of poems.

So pour yourself a cup of hot chocolate or even better a warm, spicy toddy, snuggle up with your most comfy blanket, and enjoy the vivid imagination of poet Robert Frost.

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Robert Frost

Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids, my debut novel, is a romantic comedy due to be released on March 3, 2014.

I'm so excited!

I've been asked a few times how I get ideas for my books. In preparation of the upcoming release I thought I'd share a few real life situations that have happened to me over the years. Let's just say once you read them, you'll realize how I get my ideas, and mind you, this one is tame.

A few years back I worked at a Silicon Valley company. My boss at the time was an absolute doll (I will always hold him in high esteem). We had a many things in common, writing being one of them. This guy is a brainiac - photographic memory and all. Won a full scholarship to Columbia…enough said.

Me, I’m a cheese ball - with nuts. Smart enough, but not focused on any one thing as I love doing a wide variety of things. Writing is my outlet to life’s hurdles.

My manager and I decide to swap stories and critique each other. His story is great, more factual than fiction, and I’d love to see it finished.

At the time this event happened, I had entered two stories into the Harlequin Black Moment contest and was busy with revisions.

1) Romantic Suspense Guilty Until Proven Innocent (which eventually took 2nd place)

2) Romantic Comedy Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids (which eventually took 3rd place)

NOTE: My manager's shorthand for my stories are “Guilt” and “Sex”, yeah go figure.

The boss was about to fly to Boston to see his boss and he hates flying, so genius here prints the first half of my suspense and the first half of the comedy figuring if one doesn’t interest him maybe the other will.

He went on his trip, came back, and when it’s time for my weekly 1-1, he calls me and tells me to come to his office thirty minutes earlier. At this point I’m nervous, so afraid he’s going to tell me both are trash.

We have our usual 1-1 session about work and then he says “now to the important stuff.” He says, “I like the suspense, but love the comedy. I see so much of you and your sense of humor in it. I found myself cracking up on the plane, so much so people were giving me dirty looks.” Now that said, this guys has the exact voice of “Tony the Tiger” no kidding! His laugh is hysterical and infectious, I considered that a compliment as there are a lot of laughs to the story.

Our time was at an end. I saw him check his watch and he says, “Walk me to my next meeting so we can finish talking…”

We’re walking and he’s whispering about some of the sexy, funny spots I put my heroine into in my story. He’s making suggestions and grinning ear-to-ear. I can see he’s really fighting not to burst out laughing. We get to the hall near his conference room I turn to leave and as I walk away he says "keep working and I want less 'Guilt' and more 'Sex'," at the exact moment his boss rounds the corner. The VP's mouth drops, he shakes his head, and walks away saying, “I’m not even going to ask." At this point, my boss loses it and that deep booming laughter bubbles over, echoing off the halls as we walk away.

I’m thinking, we are soooo in trouble. My mind is racing. I'm in a total panic imagining a call from HR, getting fired for inappropraite conduct and who knows what. I mean his boss is our VP. I found out later that the VP had been giving the boss dirty looks all through the meeting, and afterwards the boss figured he better clear the air. He took the VP for coffee and proceeded to tell him about my writing and about both stories. The next thing I know I get a call from the VP and all he says is, “I want more Sex”…just as the boss walked into my office laughing. They had a huge laugh, at my expense, and neither realize I'm in serious jeopardy, about to mess my britches.

This is the kind of mischief I get into. Needless to say, when you’re reading my books chance are VERY high you’re reading something that happened to me in some way…not that I’ll ever admit it. Who knows maybe I’ll run a contest after the release of my books asking what in the book really happened to me…keep your eyes open.

Hi everyone, I have only one great deal to share today, and that's an Amazon link (hopefully) for 208 free cookbooks to download to your computer or Kindle. This info is borrowed from another forum. January is a perfect time to try new recipes. Enjoy! Cooking

Got that tune running through my head and can't get it out! Does that ever happen to you? I might not know the name of the tune, but the words dance through my thoughts taunting me to remember. I think it's the temperature outside and the warm logs burning inside that keep those words dancing in my thoughts. Oh, wait! I Googled it and that is the title. Google it, you'll remember it!

So, with the chill factor, it was 6 degrees this morning here in Georgia. The buses ran, the students were delivered to school. The bells rang and school carried on. Why? Well, because here in Georgia, we'll call off school if one snowflake falls, but if the skies are clear, we're open for business. I can't figure that one out. Snow happens at 32 degrees, frost bite in a matter of minutes is likely at 6 degrees. We allow our kids outside to play in the snow, they slide down snow covered hill on cardboard. Yet, we close the schools. Then when the low temperature really makes it dangerous to be outside, we have them waiting on the bus in 6 degree temperatures.

Oh well, the day is over and I'm home warm with the cat snuggling on my shoulder and my bare feet held out to the warmth of the fire logs. So all is good. The kiddies made it through the cold. They made it through the day and everything went well.

Now I'm thinking of warmer climes. So here are a few more vacation pictures to warm your night!

Did you know that they carve elaborate sculptures of food for the extravganza night on MSC cruises?
I can't imagine how long they worked on these elaborate carvings. Done  in butter, ice, and fruit. Absolutely amazing!
How about this sunny spot in the Mediterranean? Would love to be here now, wouldn't you?
Or here hiking up the volcanic mountain side of Santorini while our cruise ship awaits our return from a day of siteseeing!
We could visit the ruins of the temple of Athena near the site of the first Olympic  Games, I know for a fact that it gets warm here!
This amazing stadium is in Athens and was constructed for the last Olympic Games held there.  It gets really warm here too!

Now, are you feeling warmer? No, then how about a book that is really hot?

Colin and Chloe with Buttercup“The cow is of the bovine ilk; one end is moo, the other milk.”
― Ogden Nash,
In the world of cows, 92% of the females in a boy/girl set of twins are sterile and called Freemartins. The reproduction systems in these cows are malformed and they rarely ever grow to adulthood with the ability to reproduce. One cow defied the odds. She was taken in by our daughter Alison and her husband to raise on their little farmstead.  Her story as told by Alison.
Diron holding baby calf.jpg1“Early in 2011, a brother and sister twin Holstein calf set from my parent’s dairy farm (Trissel’s Farm) came to live with my husband and me. A female cow, who is twins with a male, is almost always infertile, nature is smart like that, and so they’re generally used for beef. And that’s what we were raising them for. We decided it was best not to name the pair; but our [then] 5-year-old son, Colin, called the twin calves Violet and Moo. As Violet grew, we couldn’t help but notice that once a month it was an incredibly hard job to keep her in our pasture. Our neighbor’s field of a few beautiful Herford cows, complete with a bull, boarders ours. One cold morning in early spring, I was loading the kids in the car, getting ready to take Colin to preschool. I noticed Violet was missing from our field. We drove all around looking for her, and even drove to our neighbors house, twice, thinking maybe she was visiting their cows. The second time we drove to their house, because I had no idea where else she could be, Colin spotted her. “There she is!! She’s making friends already with the ‘bully’ cow!”  So she was, and so our neighbors allowed her to stay for a few days.
Months went by and we hadn’t thought much about the incident with the “bully cow.” But come to think of it, she hadn’t tried to leave the field in a long time.  And well, yes, she was getting big. Bigger than her twin brother. This past fall, a farm vet confirmed that the (almost) impossible had happened. Violet was pregnant and due around Christmas time. Her darling half Herford heifer calf was born a few days before Christmas. Violet the Cow rejoined her sisters of the herd at the Trissel Farm. My neighbor says she thinks Violet knew what she was doing all along. Her baby girl, named Buttercup, is with us now and someday will be a dairy cow too, only not on the Trissel farm, but on a place in the country providing milk for several families.”~

Intuition or Sixth Sense?

I saw a news post about a woman at Walmart who had a feeling about a man. He was acting strangely and she wrote down his tag number. Later that same day the man abducted a seven year old girl. The woman gave the tag number to the police and the child was saved.

There was another case a few years ago where a woman had a feeling about a child being in danger and it turned out she was right. The child had been kidnapped and thanks to the woman's intuition or sixth sense, that child was saved.

The second case is where the idea for A Matter of Trust was born. Have you ever experienced intuition that saved you or someone you know? Have you experienced a sixth sense? Tell us about it. You share one and I'll tell you about one of mine.

A Matter of Trust

By MJ Flournoy

While watching a news account of the rescue of an abducted child, I became absorbed in the story. So much so, that I took that one event and built an entire plot around it. The person in the news story encountered a small child and her intuition told her something was wrong. Being a teacher, I have often encountered situations where that intuition kicked in to help a child. Often teachers have a sort of sixth sense where the well-being of students is concerned.
I took that grain of an idea and built it into the plot of A Matter of Trust. Jolie Wyngate is a teacher with a gift, or curse, depending on how she views it. She tries to keep knowledge of her ability undercover, but when the well-being of a child is at risk, she has to use her ability, regardless of the personal cost.
What would you do in a similar situation? If you had a special gift, but sharing that gift could cause you to lose the career you’d worked hard to establish, would you do it? Would you do the right thing regardless of personal costs?
I like to think that I would rise to the occasion. That my innate sense of always “do what is right, regardless,” would be strong enough to help me do what my conscious insisted I do.
That is exactly the dilemma Jolie faces in A Matter of Trust. She has learned through many personal setbacks that sharing her gift with others usually came with a steep price for her personally. Now she faces the ultimate challenge.
Mac Carlson is a man on a mission. Ex-Navy SEAL and security expert, Carlson’s mission is to save a kidnapped child. Jolie shows up on his radar as his major suspect. With serious trust issues on both sides, it seems unlikely that these two will be able to work together to save the kidnapped child, let alone develop a serious relationship.
Add to that the presence of the Maniac, the disembodied voice that is the source of much of Jolie’s information and the plot becomes very complicated. A Matter of Trust, by MJ Flournoy, available now.

Excerpt:

A Coke, a fat one, or an orange soda.
"Not gonna happen." Jolie Wyngate shrugged, climbed from her car and hurried toward the convenience store to pick up a quick snack before continuing on her way south.
And why not?
"Because I have to drive another hundred and fifty miles, and I don't intend to stop every half hour for potty breaks."
You are so not any fun! It's just a Coke, for Pete's sake.
"And you, lady, are so predictable."
Make it chocolate then.
Jolie smiled. Chocolate, a compromise with which she could live. "Right."
And stop speaking out loud, people will think you're crazy.
"Me crazy? Get real, Maniac, I've talked to you since childhood. If I haven't landed in the
loony bin by now, I hardly think it's going to happen."
Humor me, then.
Jolie shrugged, continuing toward the store. She'd pick out a chocolate bar to keep her unseen companion happy.
Serve you right if I quit talking to you all together.
"Put it in writing." Jolie reached for the door handle.
A giggle erupted within Jolie's mind. Then, in the tone Jolie hated hearing: Shush, pay
attention. There's something wrong in there.
Oh, hell. Jolie bit the soft flesh of her lower lip. Her hand tingled as if the door was
electrified. Shit, this was the real reason for the Maniac's sudden thirst.
The cool, dry air of the convenience store surrounded her when she stepped through the open door. For a second, the young clerk behind the counter looked up from the newspaper spread in front of her. Nothing. Jolie expelled a breath of relief, exchanged a quick smile with the clerk, and then headed toward the candy isle.
Then she saw her. The little girl wandered listlessly down the candy isle, her small hand
trailing over the rows of candy, gently touching, but taking nothing. Jolie watched her for a moment, then scanned the store and saw no one in sight.
The child turned, her gaze lifting until it found Jolie. She tilted her head to the side, her eyes searching Jolie's for an instant. Then she moved closer and stared up at her. The expression on the small face caused Jolie's heart to turn over. She knelt to the child's level and touched the riot of red curls. A jolt of emotion skittered along Jolie's spine, but Jolie forced herself not to pull away.
"Hey, sweetie, does your mommy know you're out here alone?"
The little girl looked about three. She continued to stare mutely. Jolie smiled at her. "That your mommy behind the counter?"
She lifted the child into her arms. Unprepared for the sudden shock of pain and despair that engulfed her, Jolie almost dropped her. Instead, she tightened her arms instinctively around the frail body.
Something's not right.

Her paranormal abilities had always caused her grief. But can they save the life of a child who has been spirited away from her parents and the life of the man she loves?

Jolie Wyngate is a middle school teacher with an extraordinary gift—or is it a curse? Throughout her life, she's been never been sure. Now, when she is implicated in the disappearance of a child, the ultimate value of her powers will be put to the test.

Mac Carlson, former Navy SEAL and security expert, is tasked with rescuing the girl, Rachael Anne. From the moment he meets Jolie, his suspicious and protective nature sets its sights on her as a prime suspect. Can Jolie clear her name and gain this man's hard-won trust?

More importantly, can she save the girl before time runs out? She won't be able to do it without her psychic abilities—but Mac has a hard enough time trusting Jolie as it is, let alone trusting her powers to lead them to Rachael Anne.

As Mac and Jolie realize they have no choice but to work as a team—and as they slowly warm to each other in the process—they realize they have a new problem: the man they are after has set his sights on Jolie. Now Jolie will need all of her abilities, and all of Mac's strength and skill, to stay out of the fiend's hands and bring Rachael Anne back home.

Good Wednesday Morning. What makes you cry?

Sad music or a romantic song? Unchained Melody makes me cry because it reminds me of the time Mama and I were discussing nursing and/or personal care homes for Daddy. Whispering Hope, The Garden of Prayer, Mama's favorite hymns, put that can't-breathe-knot-in-my-chest feeling that means I'm about to cry. Amazing Grace makes me tear up every time because Daddy loved that hymn.

Patriotic music like The Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful, or the site of Flags waving make me proud and shivery. (more tears likely)

Music moves me whether sung or played by a band or orchestra, or even a single musician. I'm easy!

I don't watch movies I know will be sad. I really can't handle them.

Show me a cute baby or a dog and I tear up. Pictures of my daughter in her wedding gown made me cry, too!  We will have another wedding soon and I'll get to cry then, too!

When I think about my parents I laugh at some memories, but sentimental memories do me in. My eyes water and my nose runs.

Give me a book or a movie about kids finding parents or a childless couple adopting or a long- wished- for pregnancy and I grab the tissues. Angel movies, movies about a person who dies but revives, you know, a character is in tears and then...a second chance!

Writing a sad scene makes me water my keyboard. This scene from my next book, Haunting Refrain, gets to me, too.

Sarah had been only ten when his father died from a heart attack. William had stood alone at the grave site on the July day the minister said kind words over the open grave. Her parents had stood on both sides of the seventeen–year-old, who hadn’t shed a tear during the entire time. They had been his family at the funeral home as his father’s colleagues paid their respects. William had been surprised to see some of his teachers and fellow students. No one commented on his mother’s absence. Not once had Sarah been in William’s house. The housekeeper had stayed at the house to tend to his mother.

HAUNTING REFRAIN by Mary Marvella

A short teaser from FOREVER LOVE.

When the slave drums beat at night I think about becoming Devon's woman. I know good women do not find the mating pleasurable, but I hear the slave women talk about it. I know I will love it with my Devon. I dream about how it will be and I ache deep inside. Would it be worth eternal damnation if we did not wait? I should not write these words, but I have no one with whom to share my wicked thoughts.
Lou

Sabrina dozed in the chair where she’d read for hours. Her skin tingled as she pictured the bronzed body of the man chopping wood. Shirtless and sweating, he looked like a primitive as his muscles flexed. Her nipples tightened at the thought of wrapping herself around him.
The light feeling in her head gave way to longing. She’d never felt this soul-deep need. What he made her feel was more than caring. She needed to find herself, to understand what plagued her, and she knew only Devon could give it to her. Which made no sense to Sabrina. She didn’t know anyone named Devon. Hell, she knew the man better from Lou's writing than she did most people who inhabited her life.

Guess who dropped by to warm herself in front of our fireplace? Jessica Trapp is here!

Jessica, how is 2014 treating you?

The first week of January.  What a rush.  The forecast says 21 degrees on Monday and 72 degrees on Friday.  Aside from the schizophrenic weather, there’s the hectic holiday whirl and robot season has kicked into full build.  Even with all this, my new year’s resolutions have been aggressive.

I love New Year’s Day.  Not even sure why.  My husband and I rarely go out and this year was no exception:  we rang the old one out and the new one in snuggled in our usual read-a-book-on-the-couch pose.

But I still love New Year’s.  Something about new starts.  New beginnings.  New projects.  Out with last year’s mistakes, and onto something better, bigger, more exciting.

So far, the first week has been just that.  I’ve been walking every day, I’m wildly working to finish The Heretic’s Daughter, and once again I’ve become a robot mom. (It’s sorta like being a soccer mom except involves building robots.)

My mottos for this year are “Focus on what’s working” and “Work, not worry”.  So far, so good.

Happy New Year to all!  Keep plugging along at your goals.

(Pssst. A little you might not know about Jessica)
When Jessica Trapp gets elected evil queen of the galaxy she intends to make laundry illegal.  In the meantime, against a jaded modern society, she dares to believe in commitment, true love and the idea of two-becoming-one.

Her novels are striking for their sensuality and strong conflicts between her heroes and heroines.  She believes a dynamic romance is one where two opposing characters are transformed into a passionate loving couple.

Her writings have been described as a “bold unabashed voice” and “beautifully evocative.”  She has placed in a myriad of national fiction writing contests and won numerous awards including the KISS from Romantic Times BookReview magazine.

A woman with a mission...
After seeing women brutally raped and sold into slavery, the enchantress Gweneth of Windrose vows to do anything to set them free.  Even resort to seduction, deceit and murder.  Or kidnapping a man and forcing him to marry her.

A man who has been wronged...
Disguised as a commoner, Jared the Hawker hides in the shadows to avoid being thrown back into prison for a murder he did not commit.  Night after night, he sits at a tavern, gathering information to clear his name, until the most beautiful woman he has ever seen seduces him into drinking a tankard of drugged ale. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

This woman is on a mission since she has a new release! We know about that, don't we!

Rebekah's love for stories began as a child with Shel Silverstein poetry. She began writing her own poetry and short stories in junior high and high school and then went on to study theater in college.

Ultimately she ended up going back to writing so she could stay at home with her kids. Rebekah is a member of Romance Writers of America as well as the Fantasy, Futuristic, Paranormal Chapter, her local Los Angeles, Orange County, and Young Adult chapters. BLURB:
Evaine, a struggling New York theater student, enters an unsanctioned drug trial in an effort to pay bills.  She awakens in a derelict hospital, chained to a bed with no memory of who she is, or how she got there.  A band of pale skinned men, led by the gorgeous Luca, burst in, whisking her away to safety.

Once at Haven House, Evaine is introduced to The Family. Like them, she has become A Deader, a reanimated Undead.

Luca is hell-bent on stopping the experimentations, and killing those responsible. He has no time for a Newborn who is struggling to control her rages, hunger, and powers. Nor does he have the desire to deal with the feelings she's awakening within him.

Despite their best efforts, Evaine and Luca find their connection intensifying when suddenly, she remembers not only who she is, but also her fiancĂ©, Tristan; who is still looking for her.

Torn between her first love and her new heart’s desire, Evaine runs back to Tristan putting everyone in danger. When a rogue faction of Deaders, called Feeders, attempts to kidnap her, Luca suspects Evaine is the key to the experiments.

Can everyone band together to keep Evaine off the cutting table of those she escaped from? Or will second death tear her away from everyone, for good?

Inquiring minds want to know!
