My New Puppy

Pets

This is exactly what Nibby looks like, hey it's better then Knuckles. That's what DH wanted to call her.

Recently my dog Junior had to be put to sleep. We have a wonderful Veterinarian, he cried right along with us.

I need a dog to hug so it didn't take long before we got Nibby. She is a German Shepherd dog and was born on May 20th. We got her when she was nine weeks old.

The very first day we brought her home she was nervous and afraid. She didn't even know what a dog toy was. She spent the night in my arms, shaking and looking all around. That night she slept in my bed, with a few dog chews and toys surrounding her.

In the morning there was a fantastic change in her. She got it! The toys were her's and the toybox was full!
Dog chews were for chewing and canned food was for dogs to eat. She'd never had anything but dry food and since she had diarrhea the doctor gave her special canned food. She went crazy. Life was fun!

Then her new cousin BoBo came over to visit. Soon they were running around like maniacs. It's funny how BoBo, who is full grown, plays so gentle, while little Nibby plays so rough. An adult dog just knows what a baby is and they exhausted each other. Out she went. Sound asleep.

Pets

So Nibby has grown quite a bit she is now three months old. I find little puffs of her cottony fur all over the place. Although there is a tiny patch of adult fur on the middle of her tail. So I can tell what her fur is going to end up like. Shiny!

I think she is pretty well house trained as she has never pooped inside and has peed inside for over a week.
How did I get so lucky? She only ate one old shoe and hasn't chewed on any furniture.or anything other then what she is supposed to. There are dog chews and toys everywhere. I put them away, she takes them out.
Very cute doggie.

Well at three months she is now pushing the limit. What can I get away with? What do you mean stay? What are you guys eating, gimme some! A lot of training will have to be done in the very near future.
Her sudden bursts of energy is amazing. Getting up to let her out is tiring. Yes, the DH who promised to help does not help at night. He'll pay for that!

Nibby has discovered how to bark when she wants my attention. She knows a lot of human phrases, Like do pee pee, thank goodness for that one. She knows what are you hungry means, go get the ball, sit, down and give me your  paw. The staying is intermittent and she needs work. She is such a handful, but when she lays her little head on my neck and puts her paws up to hug me. And wonders of wonders, her ears are up. Stay tuned for the further escapades of Nibby. Growing up for a puppy,

My recent discovery is that my ultimate gift is not a pair of Manolo Blahnik skyscraper-heeled shoes. Nor is it a box of Godiva chocolate.

It’s a Lily.

Not the flower, but a fluffy Bichon/Poodle puppy my grandsons named Lily. Her first few weeks in her new home were very hard. Weighing in at two pounds, she was hypoglycemic and had a respiratory infection. But after a trip to the vet, Lily and I bond over Nutri-Cal, antibiotic doses and numerous feedings out of a child’s medicine dropper.

Now she’s a real scrapper. In fact, she’s so active I had to put on lipstick and get in the picture just to hold her still.

She fits perfectly into my daily routine. My husband’s job often takes him away from home. Lily makes a great companion. She sits at my feet while I write. When she’s restless she starts wandering my office. This immediately catches my attention because she’s not fully housetrained yet. So up I jump and outside we go.

My biggest challenge is keeping her off the bottom shelves of my bookcases. Teething, she loves to nibble on the pages and seems obsessed with the printed word. During edits of AFTER GLOW, my erotic paranormal story now available at http://www.thewilderroses.com/, she often sat on my lap while I made final edits.

“Which sentence sounds better?” I ask out loud. “Her hand rested on his hard chest,” or “She rested her hand on his hard, muscular chest.”

Lily looks up at me with those dark eyes and barks twice, letting me know she likes the second one better. Just kidding, but she does listen intently to every word I say.

She didn’t enter my life in the best of health, but she’s become a blessing to my family. Her love is unconditional. Her spirit is contagious. Her companionship is priceless. She’s truly my ultimate gift.

What’s yours?

Until later,

This past weekend, I spent a whole day working on a major love scene in my work in progress. Laboring, sweating, deleting, rewriting while sighing, huffing and pulling my hair. Do you get the picture?

I usually start my love (or sex) scene with enthusiasm. Hey, everyone loves to watch Hero and Heroine gazing into each other’s eyes, trailing a seductive look over each other’s cheeks and lingering to study each other’s lips. Should we go for it? Is it going to taste as good as it looks?
Once they overcome an initial hesitation—so to speak because my alpha hero and my assertive heroine always know what they want—they melt into each other’s arms, play, nibble, devour. They have fun and like what they are doing. So why stop now?

More exploration is in order.
In the old historical novels I used to love years ago, HE would take the lead in the next phase of the game. Now-a-days, SHE likes to show she is a woman of her time. During phase two, hands run from throat to waist to skim the flesh in between, and lips soon follow. Things get hot.

To cool down, they open a few buttons and lower a couple of zippers. Often enough, the undressing has the opposite effect. They get warmer, even blazing hot. Caresses and kisses are not enough to extinguish the fire but soon lead to a mutually explosive satisfaction. Unless someone, or something, interrupts them, and then they will try again in the next chapter.

This is the basic plot of my love scene.
Since I usually layer my writing, I go back to check if Hero and Heroine display their emotions. After all, they are flesh and blood characters who live, love and suffer. They need to share their feelings with us. If not, I torture them until they do.

I forgot to mention I always try to choose an interesting setting that would put Hero and Heroine in the right mood. I also add a few sensorial details. The ocean breeze carrying the scent of her perfume. The taste of vodka on his lips. The callousness of his palm against the softness of her skin. Characters have to smell, taste, and feel to be real.

My book, TO LOVE A HERO is set in Belarus, a Russian country I visited on business trips, a place where I learned to drink vodka, toast by saying Nazhtrovia, and discover the Russian hospitality. Sure enough my hero, General Sergei would invite the American heroine to a toast of vodka before tasting her lips.

In my second book, French Peril, the French hero, Count François has often a glass of wine in his hand. He describes himself as follows: I can’t resist a pretty woman. I come from a long line of glorious adulterers and fabulous lovers.

Do you like love scenes? How often or how many? Hot ones? What temperature would you like the sex scenes to reach?

Leave a comment for the chance to win one of my ebooks.

“Mona Risk writes heroes with heart, heroines with spunk in stories and settings that are simply unforgettable!" -- Roxanne St. Claire, Killer Curves, National Bestseller.

Today is the first day of school in my area. Last night, as I talked to my grandson, I heard the excitement in his voice. His tomorrow was going to be filled with new adventures; a ride on the big yellow school bus—#18 no less—, meeting new friends and playing on the monkey bars at recess. I could imagine the sparkle in his eyes with such clarity while he chattered. I remember the burning excitement that had ran through my veins on the last night of my summer vacation.

This morning, while I thought about what I would write for this blog, I connected the dots between the emotions Michael evoked in me and who I am today. I think we’ll all admit at times school wasn’t always the most exciting adventure and during our formative education years we longed for the day when the information overload would end. How stupid were we?

We started learning the moment we were born and will continue to do so until we take our last breath. Yes, there are those who resist the urge to learn, but the majority of us thirst for knowledge. We find fields of interest and gladly roll up our sleeves and open our minds and take in every possible bit of information that relates to it.

I do wonder at what magical second in my life the craft of writing became my field of interest? Was it the moment my mother read the end of a storybook? Or after I scribbled my first coherent sentence? Maybe when I walked into my school library and marveled at the endless shelves of book, all available to me? Or did the interest bug bite me after I’d read the one book I still remember from those wonder years? Maybe it was a combination of all those experiences that planted the seed of desire in my soul.

I’m excited for my grandson because his moment is going to happen and when it does, wondrous doors will open.

So, do remember the moment that changed your life?

Happy Birthday, Beth Trissel!

≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥≥

So it was Sunday and I'm late. Sorry, my Internet went wonky this afternoon.

More about RWA National 2010.

A room that will allow 2,000 women to eat in an elegant sit down dinner has to be huge. I took this photo 1/3 of the way from the front. Tables covered twice as much room behind me. You can see the tiny stage if you squint.
The red haired woman on the screen is Angi Morgan, a newly published author who won a Rita award. (Many of us would almost kill for one. Ask Beth or Autumn about the Golden Heart for unpublished authors.

Conference food can be interesting, but this is the first RWA National conference where the same meat was served every meal. I like chicken, I really do. Imagine our surprise when each meal had the same baked chicken, (little baked chicken quarters). I wondered who got the rest of the chickens. Each time there was a different sauce for the chicken and slightly different vegetables. Imagine feeding 2000 people for each meal. The service was smooth as the desserts, though.

At RWA we have our big awards ceremony and some of us dress as though we were attending the Academy Awards or at least a big party. This year we had a sit down dinner.

I found Mona and two other VIPS. Yep, I ate with the president and the president elect of The Kiss of Death Chapter for the Rita and Golden Heart Award Dinner.

I'd have put more photos below, but I can't make that work. You might get another post or two with photos.

“Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our Children.”

Certain things catch your eye, but pursue only those that capture your heart.
~ Old Indian saying
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.
~ Cherokee Expression
Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. We are a part of the earth and it is part of us. ~Chief Seattle
Lose your temper and you lose a friend; lie and you lose yourself.”
~Hopi
Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish has been caught, only then will you find money cannot be eaten.
~ Cree Prophecy
May the warm winds of heaven blow softly upon your house. May the Great Spirit bless all who enter there.  May your moccasins make happy tracks in many snows, and may the rainbow always touch your shoulder.
~ Cherokee Prayer Blessing
Wakan Tanka, Great Mystery, teach me how to trust my heart, my mind, my intuition, my inner knowing, the senses of my body, the blessings of my spirit. Teach me to trust these things so that I may enter my Sacred Space and love beyond my fear, and thus Walk in Balance with the passing of each glorious Sun.
~ Lakota Prayer
Honor the sacred. Honor the Earth, our Mother. Honor the Elders.
Honor all with whom we  share the Earth:-
Four-leggeds, two-leggeds, winged ones,
Swimmers, crawlers, plant and rock people.
Walk in balance and beauty.
~Native American Elder
O’ Great Spirit, help me always to speak the truth quietly, to listen with an open mind when others speak, and to remember the peace that may be found in silence.
~ Cherokee Prayer
We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can’t speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees.
~ Qwatsinas, Nuxalk Nation
“What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.” ~ Crowfoot, Blackfoot warrior and orator
…Everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence. ~ Mourning Dove Salish

The Great Spirit is in all things, he is in the air we breathe. The Great Spirit is our Father, but the Earth is our Mother. She nourishes us, that which we put into the ground she returns to us…. ~Big Thunder (Bedagi) Wabanaki Algonquin

“One does not sell the land people walk on.” ~Crazy Horse, Sept. 23, 1875
“Where today are the Pequot? Where are the Narragansett, the Mohican, the Pokanoket, and many other once powerful tribes of our people? They have vanished before the avarice and the oppression of the White Man, as snow before a summer sun.
“Will we let ourselves be destroyed in our turn without a struggle, give up our homes, our country bequeathed to us by the Great Spirit, the graves of our dead and everything that is dear and sacred to us? I know you will cry with me, ‘Never! Never!’”

“When it comes time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.”  ~Chief Aupumut, Mohican. 1725
“From Wakan-Tanka, the Great Mystery, comes all power. It is from Wakan-Tanka that the holy man has wisdom and the power to heal and make holy charms. Man knows that all healing plants are given by Wakan-Tanka; therefore they are holy. So too is the buffalo holy, because it is the gift of Wakan-Tanka.”
– Flat-Iron (Maza Blaska) Oglala Sioux Chief
“When the Earth is sick, the animals will begin to disappear, when that happens, TheWarriors of the Rainbow will come to save them.” ~ Chief Seattle
“I am a red man. If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place. He put in your heart certain wishes and plans, in my heart he put other and different desires. Each man is good in his sight. It is not necessary for Eagles to be Crows. We are poor…but we are free. No white man controls our footsteps. If we must die…we die defending our rights.” ~ Sitting Bull Hunkpapa Sioux
“I will follow the white man’s trail. I will make him my friend, but I will not bend my back to his burdens. I will be cunning as a coyote. I will ask him to help me understand his ways, then I will prepare the way for my children, and their children. The Great Spirit has shown me – a day will come when they will outrun the white man in his own shoes.” ~ Many Horses
If you talk to the animals they will talk with you
and you will know each other.  If you do not talk to them
you will not know them, and what you do not know
you will fear.  What one fears one destroys.
~Chief Dan George
“The American Indian is of the soil, whether it be the region of forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the landscape, for the hand that fashioned the continent also fashioned the man for his surroundings. He once grew as naturally as the wild sunflowers, he belongs just as the buffalo belonged….” Luther Standing Bear Oglala Sioux
“Our land is everything to us… I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember that our grandfathers paid for it – with their lives.”

I'd love for you to meet a delightful young woman I found in the Goody Room at RWA National last month. No, I didn't take her home but I make her agree to blog for us before I let her leave the room. Please help me welcome D. D. Scott, author of BOOTSCOOTIN' BLAHNIKS.

D. D. Scott’s romantic comedies are all about sexy, sassy, smart, career-driven women and the men who complete them. They're a bit chick lit with a gone-country twist.

She's a member of RWA as well as RWA's Chick Lit Writers of the World, Kiss of Death, ScriptScene, ESPAN, and IRWA Chapters plus serves on RWA’s History Committee for the National RWA Board. She blogs with group blog Savvy Authors the second Friday of every month and has an active blog of her own on her website at www.DDScott.com. In addition, her first RWR article was published by RWA in the July 2010 issue.

A Writer’s Go-to-Gal for Muse Therapy, D. D. debuted her Muse Therapy Live Workshops this past March and April for GCCRWA’s Silken Sands Conference in Florida and RT BookLovers’ Conventions in Ohio. She’s busy now preparing for the launch of MUSE THERAPY: UNLEASHING YOUR INNER SYBIL (the book version of her Muse Therapy Online Classes & Live Workshops) on Kindle and Smashwords this Fall.

Bootscootin’ My Way Into E-Book Country

Yesterday may have been Friday the 13th, but in my D. D. Scott Bootscootin’ World, we’re kickin’ superstition – and Doubt Demons too – to the curb!

How?

Well...in D. D. Scott style of course...by bootscootin’ right on over or around anything in your way. Whether in cowboy boots, stilettos or pink fuzzy slippers (had me some of those too with tons of big bling glued on), it’s all about not giving-up your writing-for-publication dreams while on your Yellow Brick Road to Publishing Oz...despite the Wicked Witches, Flying Monkeys and big-ass Apple Hurling Trees swooping in on you for the kill.

And speaking of pink fuzzy slippers, I’m thrilled to be guest blogging here at Pink Fuzzy Slipper Writers for the first time and for the second stop on my BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS Blog Tour.

How did I get here?

I met your way beyond fabulous Mary Marvella at RWA10 in Orlando and just knew I wanted to be a part of her world too! If I’m not in my favorite boots or heels, I’m comfy cozy in my fuzzy slippers. Although, no denial here, the fuzzy beasts that pamper my feet are purple this year. Last year’s were pink. And next year’s, I combined both my worlds – I found pink fuzzy cowboy boot slippers! Here they are:

How cool are those babies?!

Anyhoo...I’m with you today as the second official stop on my BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS Blog Tour, celebrating the release of my debut book BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS. A romantic comedy, BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS is chick lit, gone-country. Think Sex and The City meets Urban Cowboy! And I chose Pink Fuzzy Slipper Writers as a tour stop because I read on Mary Marvella’s RWA10 post that she loves “slightly crazy middle-aged kick ass women” and damn if I don’t too!!! And my books sure fit that twisted but super fun and fabulous mold!

I’m sooo not one for molds. To the complete contrary. I always dance – bootscootin’ style for me – to my own beat. And so do my characters. We’re sexy, sassy, smart, career-driven women finding the men who complete us. I’m lucky I finally found my real-life hero. And boy do I have some fun and hotter-than-hot ones to introduce to my gutsy-gal heroines. (Did you recognize international cover model Jimmy Thomas on my debut cover?! Thought I’d start on the top...oh, that didn’t sound quite right, did it?! LOL!) Here’s a sneak peak:

I think I write such gutsy-gal heroines because I live every day of my life as both a writer and as a woman in today’s chaotic Wonder Woman-required World trying to be gutsy. Lucky for me – and my heroine’s too – I discovered Kate White’s beyond fabulous book ‘Why Good Girls Don’t Get Ahead...But Gutsy Girls Do: Nine Secrets Every Working Woman Must Know’. Yes, Kate White as in Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief. If you haven’t read Kate’s book...do it! It will change your life. (Sidenote: I met Kate at this year’s RT10 in Ohio. I was a gutsy-girl and went up and introduced myself to her. Now...we’re considering partnering for my Muse Therapy Adventures (more on that in a bit)! Gutsy, right?!)

And how’s this for more gutsy-girl antics?! Catering to your Mary Marvella’s and my love of crazy, middle-aged, kick-ass women, my BOOTSCOOTIN’ book series has characters I adoringly refer to as The Moms. Nobody ‘f’s with The Moms! Fun stuff!

Where am I going with all this gutsy-girl talk?

I’ve only made it to my very own debut-release day because I’ve had the audacity to bootscoot onto my pages with my chick lit, gone-country characters even though chick lit is supposedly dead. When everyone else on the dance floor was waltzing along with their fabulous historicals, doing whatever they do in their paranormal-style Star Wars cantinas, slithering up and down poles for an erotica twist, etc. You get the idea. I had the guts to not just bootscoot, but to also do so on the E-Book Country dance floor (BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS is available at Amazon’s Kindle Store plus on www.Smashwords.com). Retail space most of the traditional pub world is still watching from the sidelines – too afraid to dance on with gusto like nobody’s watching.

To go another gutsy-girl step forward, and to give myself a platform on which to build a fan base for my romantic comedy books, I also decided to finally use the psychology degree my parents paid for and developed Muse Therapy for writers.

In my Muse Therapy Online Classes, Live Workshops and Blog-Bits, I give writer’s fun and fabulous tools to analyze their muses’ funks, rein in their creative divas and up their page counts.

Together, we discover what makes your muses tick. What ticks ‘em off. And what makes them dance like nobody's watching.

Here’s the scoop...the secret to upping your page count isn’t done by hurling nasty insults at your muses. Oh no. You’ve got to wine and dine those divas. Whether it’s with coffee, chocolate, fabulous finds in some chic boutique, or with what I call Muse Therapy Trips, it’s all about pampering those chicks and chucks ‘til you get out of them exactly what you want...and then some.

As a writer’s Go-to-Gal for Muse Therapy, I know it ain’t easy being the Queen or King of your Creative Kingdom. It’s tough. Damn tough. There are sooo many Doubt Demons, Wicked Witches, Flying Monkeys, and Apple-Hurling Trees driving us to lie down in our poppy fields of Rejection Hell and slumber away our dreams.

But dammit! We’re writers! And like the forever gutsy-girl, tell-it-like-it-is Queen Nora (as in Nora Roberts) said at RWA10, “Publication is wild wicked with huge nosedives and near miss rejections. Suck it up...or stay outta the pool!”

I find it wonderfully inspiring that RWA10 was relocated to Disney World, a magical place, a place proof-positive that ‘Dreams really do come true’. A place that became a glorious, fun-filled reality even after countless people stomped on Mr. Disney’s dreams. Did you know that Walt Disney himself was once fired from a newspaper because “He never had any good ideas”?!

So put your own style of slippers – or whatever you, your feet and your muses love to dance in - then bootscoot, waltz, Star Wars Cantina Groove, or what the hell...pole dance your way to your dreams!

In the mean time, I’m looking forward to your comments here at Pink Fuzzy Slipper Writers and hope to see you “in therapy” either during my online class sessions or live workshops. Check my website www.DDScott.com for dates and locations.

Ohhh...and how’s this for a bit of added fun? Anyone who comments will be eligible to win a free Muse Therapy Online Class of her or his choice between now & the end of the year. So start commenting...

‘Til then...keep your muses happy. Pamper them silly. They’ll be glad you did and so will you.
